Everything was done, so that I would come to know Him

I was brought up in a Taoism family and was educated in a Presbyterian primary school. Hence I had the exposure to Christianity since young. Throughout my time in the school, I did not believe anything in the weekly Wednesday morning service that I attended. However I believe that there is a God, and every religion named the same God in different names, but they are all the same God.

My perspective of God changed though a personal crisis. One day about 13 years ago, I received the news of my mum suffering from early stage cervical cancer. I was in shocked and couldn’t stop worrying for the rest of the day. Later in the week, we decided to put my mum through an operation to remove her womb in Singapore. As I was the only one staying in Singapore (my family is based in JB), I stayed in the hospital with my mum while the rest of my family visited her regularly. While waiting beside her bed for her to regain consciousness after the operation, I was dominated by fear and worries. I kept thinking negatively. I didn’t like that feeling at all and out of desperation, I remembered how I was taught to pray in my primary school. So I started saying a really simple prayer for my mum and my heart was filled with peace after I said the prayer. I was amazed by the power of my simple prayer that brought me peace.

No long after my mum was discharged from hospital, I went for a business trip to Chicago. During a day tour that I had joined for the weekend, I met a Singaporean girl on the trip. We started chatting with each other and tagged together for the rest of the day tour. She was actually the person who shared Christ with me and brought me to church when I came back to Singapore. I later found out that both of us had incidentally prayed for someone to enjoy the day with at the beginning of the day tour and God answered our simple prayer!

God works in amazing way, His desire is for us to know Him. I know that throughout all the years of my life, He has always been there for me, even before I accept Him as my Saviour. One of my favourite Christian songs is “So You Would Come”, and I really believe in every word the lyrics say. That is what God has done for me.

Before the world began, You were on His mind
And every tear you cry, Is precious in His eyes
Because of His great love, He gave His only Son
Everything was done, So you would come

Nothing you can do, Could make Him love you more
And nothing that you've done, Could make Him close the door
Because of His great love, He gave His only Son
Everything was done, So you would come

Come to the Father, Though your gift is small
Broken hearts, broken lives, He will take them all
The power of the Word, The power of His blood
Everything was done, So you would come
